History
Brooks's was founded in March 1764 by twenty-seven prominent Whig nobles, initially known as Almack's after its tavern keeper. In 1777 wine merchant William Brooks commissioned architect Henry Holland to design a new clubhouse on St James's Street, completed in 1778, after which the club took on Brooks's name. It has been associated with the Whig and Liberal political tradition throughout its history.
