History
The Athenaeum was founded in 1824 at the instigation of John Wilson Croker for individuals with intellectual interests in science, engineering, literature and the arts. Its neoclassical clubhouse by Decimus Burton, with a Doric portico and replica Parthenon frieze, was completed in 1830. Women were admitted as guests from 1972 and as full members on equal terms from 2002.
