It is notable for its influence on the early automotive industry and motorsport industries in France and throughout the world. It advocated for the use and acceptance of automobiles in street traffic through lobbying of government law and policy; and promoted automobile use in touring. Its members included prominent motor manufacturers, business leaders and racing drivers. The club was a founder member of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA).
